Wreaths are some of our most popular products, so we know you love them as much as we do! There’s nothing better than a seasonal wreath to dress up the front of your house and greet you as you enter your front door.
If you love wreaths on your front door year round, you may decide that putting a sturdy nail into the door is a worthwhile investment, however, for those who don’t want to mark the door, or those with uPVC or composite doors, it’s worth considering other options.
People constantly ask the best way to hang a wreath on the front door, so below we’ve reviewed all the different methods with pros and cons so that you can choose the best method for your front door.
Especially for all those wreath lovers out there! Keep your front door looking fabulous with our seasonal door wreath subscription.
If you already have a door knocker on your door which will hold a wreath, this is the best possible option. It’s sturdy enough to hold the weight of the wreath and doesn’t require fixing anything to the door, so no extra work! You can either hang the wreath directly onto the knocker, or suspend it from string or ribbon hanging from the knocker.
This is our number two favourite option because it’s so versatile and suits most doors. It’s particularly good for uPVC or composite doors as they often have a weather seal that can be compromised by other methods.
Invest in a decorative ribbon or use a simple piece of twine, wrap it around the top of the wreath and hang it over the door. There are a few different ways that you can fix the ribbon/string at the top of the door.
If you have a wooden door and you’re happy to use a nail, you can permanently fix a nail close to the top of the door and tie the ribbon/string onto this nail. The advantage of this method is that when you don’t have a wreath on the door, you can use the nail to hang something else inside the door.
Alternatively, you can use drawing pins to pin the ribbon or string into the top of the door where it’s out of sight.
If you don’t want to use nails or drawing pins, or you have a uPVC or composite door, you can use an adhesive hook turned upside down on the inside of the door and loop the ribbon or string around it.
Remember to clean the surface of the door before applying the adhesive hook and the adhesive will work better. Check the manufacturer’s details to ensure that the adhesive hook will hold the weight of your wreath (to weigh your wreath, put a box onto a scale and turn it to zero, then add the wreath and check the weight).
The downside of using an adhesive hook is that you will have an upside down hook inside your door that cannot be used to hang anything inside. There’s also a chance that the adhesive may be difficult to remove.
Using a decorative ribbon or rustic string is lovely as it can really add to the design, but be aware that you should take the wreath down if there are high winds as it can move around and may get damaged.
Door hangers are great. They are very suitable for wooden doors, they are sturdy, hold your wreath firmly in place, and also take the weight of larger wreaths. You can purchase them in a range of colours to suit your door, or even clear hangers which are less noticeable.
However there are a few drawbacks that you should be aware of. Hangers may not fit all doors - check the width of your door and the hanger before buying. They do also need some clearance at the top of the door - check the thickness of the hanger and how much space you have at between the top of the door and the frame. Whilst adjustable hangers are available, they can be hard to find.
Another issue with door hangers is that depending on how well they fit, they may scratch the paintwork. To minimise the risk of damage, either look for a padded door hanger or use some small foam pads (like the ones you use for furniture feet) to provide some cushioning.
Magnetic hooks can be great for glass or doors that are reinforced with steel as they won’t leave any marks or residue. Usually these hooks come in two magnetic parts, so you can either attach the hook to your steel reinforced door, or place the two sides of the magnet either side of a pane of glass so that the two sides hold each other in place.
These hooks are a really exciting new option, but we do have concerns about their ability to hold the weight of a natural wreath, especially the larger ones, and especially for an extended period of time. They may be more suitable for lighter weight spring wreaths rather than large Christmas wreaths.
Check to see if the manufacturers give any guidelines as to how much weight they can hold and for how long. You should also check your composite door with a magnet before purchasing to ensure they are suitable for your door. Be aware also that the thickness of glass can affect the strength of the hold.
Sticky hooks are certainly convenient and easy to apply and some brands can be very strong. Larger hooks also allow you to hide the hook beneath the wreath. However, stronger adhesives, which will hold heavier wreaths for longer periods, may be difficult to remove and may mark your door.
If you are keen to try this method, we really recommend checking the size of the hook before buying, to be sure that your wreath will fit, and also consider using two hooks to distribute the weight and reduce the chances of the hooks falling.
Do be aware that weather conditions can affect the performance of adhesives, like direct sunlight and wet weather. Try to find outdoor hooks that are specifically designed to hang a wreath and check with the manufacturer to find out how much weight they will hold and which door materials they are suitable for. Always clean the door surface before applying the hook for best results. Strong adhesive hooks are probably not suitable for painted doors.
Like adhesive hooks, suction hooks are fairly easy to apply and offer the option of hiding the hook beneath the wreath. However, we have the same concerns that they may not be suitable for natural wreaths, especially the larger sizes. The performance of suction hooks may also be affected by weather conditions. These may be a better option for short term wreath hanging or for use on windows.

Before you invest in a wreath or hanging device, go through the following checklist:
Think about what height you would like your wreath to sit, so that you can place your hooks at the right height or cut the right length of ribbon.
When you buy a Green Door wreath, you can be sure it will bring you joy every time you open your front door.
